Overview

The book consists of three parts:

The first part, "Understanding AIDS", gives an outline of the debate over the HIV/AIDS hypothesis (as it stood at the time in 1994) and concludes that the hypothesis fails to explain the epidemiology or pathogenesis of AIDS, and that (then current) antiviral approaches (AZT, ddI, ddC, etc.) do more harm than good. This part is based largely upon the drug-AIDS hypothesis of Peter Duesberg and John Lauritsen, the autoimmune hypothesis of Robert Root-Bernstein, and the critiques of the HIV antibody tests by Eleni Papadopulos-Eleopulos and the Perth Group.

The second part, "Alternative Treatments for AIDS", discusses approaches to treatment not based on antiviral medications, with particular focus on dietary, nutritional, herbal, and naturopathic treatments.

The third part, "Long-Term Survivors", tells the stories of several doctors who have successfully treated HIV positive and AIDS patients without antiviral medications. Many of these patients have remained HIV positive and healthy for years, and would be termed "long-term non-progressors" by conventional standards.

Quotes

  • "We do believe that attention to enhancement and modulation of immune function presents an opportunity for recovery of health. We sincerely believe that this approach will be increasingly adopted as the HIV myth is discredited, and that we will look back and wonder why billions of dollars have been wasted in HIV-oriented research." – from the "Message to the Reader".
  • "This volume demonstrates the variety of treatment and prevention regiments that are available NOW, once one is liberated from the 'HIV causes AIDS' mythology." – Charles A. Thomas, past president of the Group for the Scientific Reappraisal of the HIV/AIDS Hypothesis.
  • "The authors recount examples of patients diagnosed with AIDS who are HIV negative, patients who are asymptomatic HIV positive, as well as long-term survivors of the disease, some who have lived with the virus for over 14 years. There are also nearly unbelievable accounts of people who have tested positive for HIV, undergone alternative healing treatments, and then tested negative. The authors, however, do not offer the hope of miracle cures for everyone. Both successes and failures of alternative treatments are discussed, and all the caregivers interviewed stress the importance of both an individualized treatment program and active patient participation. Considering the dismal success rate that conventional medicine has had thus far, a journey out to the fringes of AIDS treatment can be warranted, and this title is a worthy guide. Recommended for most collections." – Jeffery Ingram, Library Journal.
